All acts of hazing, as defined by this policy, by any individual Student, or sanctioned or promoted by any student club or organization and any of its members or alumni, are prohibited. Students are entitled to be treated with consideration and respect, and no individual may perform an act that is likely to cause physical or psychological harm to any other person within the College Community. Any such behavior is forbidden when related to admission, initiation, pledging, joining, or any other group-affiliation activity.

Any Student or organization found to be involved in any hazing activity will be subjected to the sanctions defined by the Student Code of Conduct.  A violation of this policy may exist irrespective of any alleged voluntary or consensual participation in the activity by the person(s) being abused.

Blackhawk Technical College defines Hazing as:

  1. Any action taken, or situation created that negligently, recklessly, intentionally, or unintentionally subjects any person to:

  • The risk of bodily harm, mental or physical discomfort, harassment, embarrassment, ridicule, emotional or mental brutality or degradation, abuse, torture, or interferes with academics or the health and safety of a Student, or
  • Causing or encouraging any person to commit an act that would be a violation of law or College regulations, for the purpose of initiating, promoting, fostering, or confirming any form of affiliation with a student group or organization.
  1. Soliciting, encouraging, aiding, assisting, or directing another to engage in hazing.

  2. Intentionally or knowingly permitting hazing to occur.

  3. Having first-hand knowledge that a specific hazing incident has occurred and failing to report said knowledge to College Authorities.

  4. Observation by a member of a student group or organization of any hazing activity without reporting the incident to College Authorities.

The express or implied consent of a person is not a defense against any hazing activity described above. It is also not a defense that the conduct was encouraged, sanctioned, or approved by a student organization or group.

The College expects all members of the College Community who believe they have witnessed, experienced, or are aware of conduct that constitutes hazing in violation of this policy to report the conduct to the Executive Director of Student Services.

The College will maintain a report of all violations of this policy that are reported to and adjudicated by the College. The College will update the report biannually on January 1 and August 1 of each year and will post the updated report on the College website.
